Damian Fagan and Jesse Friedman, two homebrewers who shared a passion for California farmers markets and set up Almanac in 2011, were the founders. The Farmer's Almanac, a seasonality reference guide for farmers that has been published annually in the United States since 1818, is the source of their name, Almanac. Their first beer, Summer 2010, was a bottle conditioned Belgian-style golden ale aged in Sonoma Zinfandel barrels with Sonoma blackberries. Almanac Beer wanted to make beers that were influenced by California's abundant agricultural bounty. The initial batch was sold by hand, one case at a time, out of the trunks of their cars to Bay Area bars and restaurants. Almanac Beer continued brewing and releasing quarterly beers for the next two years because the beer was so well received that in 2013 they quit their day jobs to pursue Almanac full-time.
