The idea for Wilderness Trails Zoo came from two sisters and their husbands. Taking care of and interacting with animals was enjoyable for both couples. They came up with a plan in response to this passion. By opening a park where people can get up close and personal with animals, they can satisfy their desire to be around animals and share their passion with the community. Finding land on which they could build their park was the next step. The couple couldn't pass up the chance to buy 56 acres outside of Birch Run because they had grown up in the Montrose area. Wilderness Trails Zoo, formerly known as Wilderness Trails Animal Park, opened its doors to the general public in 1991. It started small, focusing on native wildlife and horses, but as word spread about the big, small park, the collection of animals grew.
