Gablestage began as Florida Shakespeare Theatre in 1979 and began repertory performances of Shakespeare's plays in the Casino Gardens at Vizcaya. Until Hurricane Andrew destroyed the Minorca Playhouse in Coral Gables in 1992, the Florida Shakespeare Theatre was housed there from 1987 to 1992. However, the theater's mission remained unaffected, and productions continued at the Coral Gables' Carousel Theatre in 1993 and 1994. The theater changed its name to GableStage in 1998 when it moved into its current location, the storied Biltmore Hotel.
