About The Children's Bookshop
John and Ruth McIntyre founded The Children's Bookshop, an independent specialty bookstore, in Kilbirnie, Wellington, in 1992. Since then, they have relocated three times inside the same mall, tripling in size each time. They were named The NZ Independent Bookshop of the Year in 2003, and Unity Bookshop in Wellington won the award in 2008. They were honored as the North Island Regional Bookshop of the Year in 2013. Ruth and John (posthumously) received the NZ Book Industry's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. In August 1992, John McIntyre (seen above with his wife Ruth) opened The Children's Bookshop. They recognized the need for a specialized children's bookshop in Wellington as a former primary school teacher in New Zealand and the UK.
