About York Beach Surf Club
York Beach Surf Club started as a surfing club for local surfers in York, Maine in 1964. LF. "Sonny" Perkins founded the club with a loose coalition of surfers/friends to represent the region in surfing competitions along the east coast. Perkins was the first surfer in the State of Maine to use a fiberglass surfboard. The York-based Perkins family purchased the hotel in 2020 with the intention of highlighting the distinctive east coast and surfing culture and offering guests a change of pace. They had grown up hearing the tales of York Beach Surf Club and its members as they considered the name. In order to honor the excellent way of life of the east coast in southern Maine, the moniker was given a second life as the name of the hotel. The resort relates the historical tale of the development of surfing in Maine and pays homage to the first surf group from the 1960s. The hotel's complete collection of photographs is made solely of and by locals.
