Batawa Ski Hill was founded by a volunteer group of ski enthusiasts from the nearby Bata Shoe Factory in the winter of 1959. The club's mission was to foster friendship and recreational skiing. Nancy Greene and the North Star Alpine Ski Teams of the Club made a name for themselves by winning Ontario-wide ski competitions. The Club was thrilled when the Canadian Ski Patrol (Ontario Division) used their facilities in February 1985. On them the Provincial First Aid Competition was held each year, and the Chalet hosted the Annual Awards Banquet in the evening. Batawa Ski Hill only had a truck-powered tow rope and a small donated tent for serving hot drinks when it first started in 1959. With the help of a Wintario grant, private pledges, and volunteer labor, a two-story Chalet was built. It was given the name Sonja Bata when it first opened its doors in 1979.
