About Appleby Castle
Appleby Castle has been around since the Romans built a fort there to guard the crossing over the River Eden. The Castle's basement contained the remains of a Roman well after an excavation in the 1960s. The oldest part of Appleby Castle is the Keep, which is over 900 years old and is one of the few Norman Keeps in Great Britain that is still standing. The history of the Castle is diverse and extensive. The Kings of Scotland and England have held it. Lady Anne Clifford, perhaps its most well-known resident, contributed significantly to the Castle and its surroundings. Part of the Northumbrian Saxon Kingdom. In the northern Lake District, a British Kingdom of Cumbria remained independent. Assisted by the garrison, King William the Lion of Scotland in the early hours and takes it.
