Symphony Of The Mountains has a rich and illustrious past. In 1946, a small group of musicians dreamed of having a civic orchestra. This is how the orchestra got its start. It was known as the Kingsport Symphony Orchestra at the time. The initial rehearsal had 27 musicians in attendance, but that quickly increased to over 40. The conductor and all of the musicians were unpaid, and the first concert was open to the public at no cost.
