About Woodmans
Woodmans began in 1914, when a "chubby" and Bessie Woodman opened a roadside clam house on a brass gong in Essex, mass. Television had not yet been invented, and the average salary was $750 a year and a gallon of milk cost 32 cents. World war I had just begun, Babe Ruth was a rising red sox player, Fried clam lam had not yet been created, and spent a whole day boiling New England cranback on the beach. In 1916, CHUBBY invented French fries and showed off his new creation - a clam cla wrapped in corn flour and Fried in a pig fat pan - at a July 4 parade in Essex, Massachusetts. Everyone at Woodmans is proud to contribute to the community and make a difference by giving back to local organizations like schools, veterans groups, and others.
