About Skating Safe
In 1990, Skating Safe, was founded with a single product: GUMSTM Lace Bite blister protectors, which were sold only to professional hockey teams. Until they attended the United States Figure Skating Association National Championship in Philadelphia in 1998 and realized that the skating community needed better protection against blisters and falls, these were their primary products. The fall protection pads that were available to protect ice skaters were bulky, restricted free movement, and required frequent replacement, and Skating Safe discovered that the blister protection for inside new boots was either extremely expensive, ineffective, or both. As a result, they began addressing these requirements. By the fall of 1998, their research had identified a polymer gel that was hypoallergenic, efficient, long-lasting, and less expensive than those currently on the market.
