Save Our Cemeteries is committed to protecting, promoting, and protecting New Orleans' historical cemeteries through restoration, education, and publicity. In 1974, a plan was proposed to demolish the walled vaults surrounding St. Louis 2 Cemetery and replace them with barbed wire fences. Protection groups are provoked. Local protectionist Mary Louise Christophic and a group of enthusiastic citizens formed the cemetery to save them as a publicity group for the proposal. Finally, Save Our Cemeteries indeed worked with the Archdiocese to help raise funds, raise awareness, and recruit professional masons to assist. Demolition stopped and the walls were not only rescued but also stabilized and repaired.
