The Coös and Essex Counties Agricultural Society, a precursor to the Lancaster Fair, was founded in 1870. The Riding Park Association of Coös County, another recently founded organization, and the Society collaborated. The Emmons' Stockwell farm sold a 20-acre piece of land to the Riding Park Association. It was near the main thoroughfare leading to Northumberland. Lancaster Fair produced one of the best tracks of the time on this location. The two groups looked to have reached an understanding and sponsored numerous races and other events. Unfortunately, the two teams gave up on the project, and George Rowell, a New Yorker and former Lancastern, bought the site.
