About Chieftain
Chieftain Principles of Ethical Conduct for Newsrooms are based on other Gannett documents, as well as on ideas and language that were created by the Radio and Television Digital News Association and a group of Gannett executives and journalists. These standards are intended to direct columnists working with any news stage, including papers, sites, cell phones, video, web-based entertainment channels and live story occasions. Their commitments include: Finding and reporting the truth in an honest manner they will gather, report, and present news in an honest manner, keeping relevance, persistence, context, completeness, balance, and fairness in mind. To provide an informed account of activities, Chieftain will strive to acquire an understanding of the communities, individuals, and issues they cover. They will hold factual information in editorials and other types of opinion pieces to the same accuracy standards as news stories. They will be skeptical of information that comes from unofficial sources, such as social media, and will try to verify information.
