In 2001, Blackmore & Langdon, a horticultural company, celebrated its centennial. In the year 1854, Blackmore & Langdon was born in the Somerset village of Newton St. Loe, which is near Bath. Charles Frederick Langdon was also born in Newton St. Loe in 1868. After his grandparents passed away, James took over the management of a pub in Twerton, Bath, despite his engineering training. In a greenhouse at the bottom of the garden, he grew begonias. Charles, the son of a woodsman, spent his childhood on the Newton Park estate of Earl Temple of Stowe. However, he went on to pursue a career in gardening and moved to the Rectory in Newton St. Loe to work for the Rev. Lascelles. His interest in breeding and growing begonias and delphiniums was supported and financed by his employer.
