One of 1, 644 B 29 Doc Superfortresses built in Wichita during World War II is Doc. Plans have been in the works to restore the historic warbird to flying status in order to serve as a flying museum ever since Tony Mazzolini discovered Doc sitting and rotting away in the Mojave Desert in 1987. Hundreds of volunteers have worked on Doc and the restoration project for more than 15 years. Tens of thousands of hours have been spent on Doc's restoration by skilled workers and retirees from the aviation industry in Wichita, veterans, active duty military, and others who wanted to honor those who served. To keep the project going, numerous individuals and organizations also contributed financially and in kind.
