About Vegetabowls
Inspired by nature, they created a series of slide-cast functional ceramics. By turning nature's designs into clay, they can evoke a new appreciation for everyday objects. Fruits and vegetables come in all shapes, colors and textures. They were interested in the sharp contrast between the rough, dry exterior and the smooth, bright, sweet interior. By casting directly from the actual fruit or vegetable, they were able to replicate these designs in each bowl. "The Vegetabowls started eight years ago in Lexington, Massachusetts, where Melanie taught a pottery class. She asked her students to bring one fruit or vegetable each for a class on plaster molding and sliding casting. It aims to promote local agriculture, healthy eating, and appreciation of handmade functional household items. Vegetabowls is a small ceramic studio in Sarasota, Florida. Each item was handmade by Melanie and Justin McKinney. Both attended Alfred university and received bachelor of arts degrees.
