Vanessa Carlton is an American singer-songwriter and pianist who was born on August 16, 1980. Carlton decided to pursue singing after completing her training at the Academy of American Ballet, performing in bars and clubs while attending college in New York City. She joined A&M Records three months after making a demo with producer Peter Zizzo. In 2002, A Thousand Miles, her debut single, peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100. Before looking for a record agreement to distribute it, she independently made her fourth album, Rabbits on the Run (2011).
