Artichoke Festival is a 501 (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to raise funds to give back to communities around Castroville, California to celebrate the artichoke festival. The goal of Artichoke Festival is to let participants understand the unique qualities of artichokes, including planting, harvesting, preparation and consumption, and show them the impact of the artichoke industry on the history of Monterey County. Since 1959, the Monterey Peninsula has come together to celebrate California ’s official national vegetable. The history of artichokes in California began in 1922, when the first artichoke buds were grown in Castroville. Today, nearly 100% of the fresh artichokes in the United States are grown in California, and nearly two-thirds of the artichokes are grown in the small town of Castroville.
