After his family moved to the beautiful 1000 Island area of New York City, Steve was inspired by the majestic St. Lawrence River and the island's magnificent castle. He noticed many similarities between the two distant places. Both areas feature beautiful landscapes, large cruise ships and many visiting international tourists. Lawrence lacks the vineyards and wineries that flourished in Europe. Regarding this as a huge opportunity, the Conaways set about establishing a new vine-growing area in New York State and bought a farm in December 2002 at Thousand Islands Winery.
