In the 1970s, although live performances were reduced in State Theatre, there were still strange sightings-no one could explain the phenomenon. When the theater is empty, maintenance workers sometimes glimpse a man standing behind the theater, or may enter a common closet. On several occasions, the police were called and found no one in the building. Once the fur on the neck of the dog they brought up, but the officers couldn't see anything. Convinced that his existence has never left, State Theatre staff named the ghost FRED. There have been reports of about 10 sightings, some of which were voyeurs on the state's board of directors. Then in the late 1970s, historian Ken Crabbond saw someone leave the empty stage when they closed at night.
