N+1 is a print and digital literary, cultural and political magazine that is published three times a year. They also publish new online works several times a week and publish books based on the magazine's interests. N+1 was founded in New York City in 2004 by six young writers and editors who wanted to revive the tradition of politically active literary magazines in the United States. At the time, intellectual life was disturbingly distracting and draining: political magazines did not care about literature, literary magazines did not discuss politics, and big ideas had to be buried in small book reviews. The founding editors wanted to produce a magazine that covered all the topics they cared about, did not shy away from difficult and ambitious writing, and saw literature, politics and culture as aspects of the same project.
