The Meinl story begins in 1862, when Julius Meinl opens a modest grocery store in Vienna, Austria, where he sells spices and green coffee. Then, he introduced a new twist by roasting the beans and selling them to customers in Vienna. This new method eliminated the possibility of consumers burning their green coffee beans when roasting them in the oven. Offering only freshly roasted coffee to customers ensures consistent quality. The citizens of Vienna welcomed this new idea with open arms, and he eventually used this success to launch a successful business. In 1891, Meinl established a roasting plant on the same spot where the fleeing Ottoman army had abandoned hundreds of sacks of green coffee three centuries earlier. Since that time, five generations of Meinls have been selling some of the best coffee in the world. As a pioneer in the European coffee and tea industry for over 160 years, Julius Meinl has expanded its reach to 70 countries across five continents.
