About Landcraft Garden Foundation
Landcraft Garden Foundation was established in 1992 by founders Dennis Schrader and Bill Smith when they purchased 17 acres of land surrounding an 1840s-era farmhouse. They are situated in the center of the North Fork's wine region on Long Island's East End. Their initial objectives included creating a vibrant garden filled with unusual or obscure plants, placing these plants within a framework of innovative design, and providing a setting in which to test out new and exotic plant material. Landcraft Garden Foundation desired an American garden for it; to be a garden of unique interests that is a mashup of various styles and influences that blend seamlessly. The synthesis of structure, color, distinctive plant material, and composition would be demonstrated by the garden. The location itself, on a narrow strip of land between the Long Island Sound, Mattituck Creek, and Peconic Bay, provides an unusually long and moderate growing season, making it ideal for the Landcraft Gardens' development.
