The Catholic community had to travel nearly 30 miles round trip over mostly country roads to St. Mary's (now Holy Trinity) in El Cajon or Blessed Sacrament in Descanso in order to attend Mass for many years because Alpine did not have a Catholic church. A first Alpine Mass was held in 1946 at the Sheedy ranch on Highway 80 with permission from the Most Reverend Charles F. Buddy, Bishop of San Diego, and with the help of the Sheedy family. This went on until John Vitalich gave land to build a new church at the beginning of the spring of 1951. Although there are no official records, Queen Of Angels is thought that a groundbreaking ceremony took place in the 1950s. On Christmas Day 1951, the first Mass was celebrated at the brand-new Queen Of Angels, which had been formerly known as St. Philomena.
