In Queens, New York, Joe Giorello grew up in a sizable Italian family. He was always fascinated by military history and the individual experiences of Veterans. He attributes his development into an avid reader to that history. Later, Joe realized that military history might also alter the trajectory of his son's life because he was the father of a hesitant reader.
