She left school after her father died young, and her mother fell ill, leaving Gertrude to support the family. It was in this candy store that Gertrude learned and loved the art of making chocolate. In 1936, in the midst of the Great Depression, Gertrude felt she could put her knowledge and love into the art of making chocolate before starting her own business. By this time, she had married her husband and had two sons, Elmer R. and Richard. And so began Gertrude Hawk that year in the kitchen of her family's small home in Bunker Hill in Scranton, PA. With all the changes and growth, Gertrude Hawk is still a private family business.
