Charlotte Motor Speedway was designed and built in 1959 by the current Chairman and NASCAR Hall of Fame member O.Bruton Smith. The late Curtis Turner was one of the earliest stars in the racing world and a member of the Hall of Fame, a major business partner of Smith. Smith is a native of Oakbrook, North Carolina, a car dealer and short-track stock racing promoter for the Concord Motorway and Charlotte Playground. Turner is a Virginia native who saved money in the timber industry. After the driver's first appearance in 1949, he became one of the earliest drivers on the NASCAR track. Charlotte Motor Speedway built a 1.5-mile super highway on the outskirts of Queenstown. On June 19, 1960, First World 600 was held at the new facility.
