Walter Bassett (the grandson of Arthur Bassett) was an engineer who built the first European playground wheel designed by American engineer Ferris. He then built a Ferris wheel in the late 1890s and is still in Vienna's Prater Park. In 1916, the castle served as a sanatorium for officers wounded in the First World War. During World War II, it was a Sanatorium of P.L.U.T.O., an underwater pipeline. The last descendants of the Bassett family moved from Wortmouth Castle in Scotland around 1945, and the castle had many different owners. In 1977, Richard Haynes and his family bought this almost ruined castle, which made it the current Watermouth Castle with a little vision, hard work and unfailing dedication.
