A group of bluegrass musicians and fans in the Washington, DC, area established Bluegrass Unlimited in 1966. Dianne Sims, one of the founders, had discovered that the Stanley Brothers had been performing in town after the fact. She contacted her bluegrass acquaintance Gary Henderson and inquired about his knowledge of their performance. He didn't. She contacted Pete Kuykendall, another bluegrass acquaintance, to inquire if he was aware of it. He didn't. The three of them decided to start a Bluegrass Unlimited newsletter for the Washington, DC, area, promising not to miss another local performance by a touring bluegrass band.
