Charles. Willis began his career as a retail manager with Church&Company, a Cincinnati distributor of music. Later, he decided to start his own business and started to build Willis Music around the world. He started selling music scores and working for music teachers before deciding to get into publishing. Because of these connections, he was able to secure access to his catalogue of manuscripts and works of famous domestic and foreign composers. Charles continued to expand, acquiring the John church company and the George Jennings company, thereby increasing his catalog and worldwide operations. In 1910, he founded the company and on July 13, 1919, sold Charles Willis Music to Gustave Schirmer, who also owned Schwimmer music and music Boston.
