In 1950, Totem Pole Playhouse began its life in a converted car store, and later became one of the most famous and acclaimed summer theaters in the United States. The New York Times called it "Cadillac in the summer theater." In 1950, Karl Zug founded Totem Pole Playhouse with his wife Muriel Benson. As a pioneer of early television live broadcasts, Mr. Hugg became a founding member of the American Directors Association. Today, DGA represents directors of film, television, business, documentaries, news, sports and new media. Prior to his death in 2003, he served on the board of DGA for 27 years, many of whom served as vice presidents. In 1953, William H. Page (Bill), a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, was hired as the new artistic director.
