The Portuguese laurel at The Green House, Prunus lusitanica, is most often used as a privacy hedge, trimmed into decorative evergreen trees or windshields. Its tough nature can withstand all kinds of harsh conditions, including salt, heat and drought after establishment. The dark green leaves make the Portuguese laurel a beautiful and versatile species. This variety of laurel has thin and attractive dark green shiny leaves that produce fragrant white flowers in late spring / early summer and then red / deep purple berries in autumn. The berries at The Green House are not edible. If you do n’t need a privacy screen, you can feel free to use these tall shrubs along the sunny wall, or gather in the garden bed as a wonderful background for lower-growing shrubs and perennials.
