Darrell and Julie Lepper created Shipshewana on the Road in November 1992 when they brought vendors from the Shipshewana, IN outdoor market to the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, MI, where they were living at the time. For a very long time, the outdoor market has been one of the most popular places to go for retail therapy. A lot of people can't make it there because of the distance, the fact that it's only open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and the season (May through October). And so, November in 1992 started what is presently 15 to 20 Shipshewana on the Road events a year conducted throughout Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio where the vendors come to your community. Greg Fountain, their son, left a successful career in the corporate sector to join the family business in 2012.
