O, Miami started in 2011, inspired by a series of "random cultural behaviors", part of what their patrons John S. and the James L. Knight Foundation were doing at the time, their philosophy was "make art in general". When they started the festival, they thought they needed to "send" poetry to Miami. The poem is already there. In 2013, they met a lady in El Palacio de los Jugos who could neither read nor write, but wrote poems in her head and read them for friends and family. It was then that O, Miami realized that their job was not to send poems, but to find it, and once they found it, gave it a megaphone, and then replayed it back to the city. They used a Bluetooth speaker hidden in a three-dimensional case to bring poetry to beach tourists who stumbled upon the case and put it in their ears.
