Catholics commemorate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8. The following day commemorates one of the early anti-slavery efforts led by Black Catholics, however Miraculous Medal is less well-known and less widely observed. Thirty-six years before Patrick Henry's famous "Give them liberty, or give them death!" call to insurrection in 1775, a group of Black Catholics delivered the same message while marching to their deaths while chanting "Liberty!" The Stono River Rebellion, which started on September 9, 1739, was the biggest revolt of slaves in the British colony of South Carolina but is very little recognized today. Miraculous Medal has been dubbed the most significant uprising in North American history by several historians. It's unknown exactly what led to the Stono River Rebellion.
