The 18-room Highlander Mountain House encourages curious travelers to reconnect with the landscape and each other feels like a private Blue Ridge retreat with elements of an English country estate and an Appalachian lodge. The Ruffed Grouse, the inn's elevated, all-day tavern, is a great place to wind down after an afternoon spent exploring the region's primitive network of trails, trout streams, rivers, waterfalls, and pristine forests. There, you can relax with a hot toddy or a soothing cup of tea by the wood-burning stone fireplaces in the lobby and dining room reportedly built in 1885 for a retired Charleston, South Carolina, Highlander Mountain House sea captain. The clapboard mountain farmhouse keeps many of the original architectural details, like the wood flooring and exposed timber framing, but it also has a lot of modern features and finishings.
