For over 40 years, Harrisville Designs has been spinning 100% Virgin Wool yarn in Harrisville, New Hampshire. Harrisville's textile tradition, as one of the handful of woolen mills remaining in this country, is rich and goes back to 1794, when the first of several mills was built across the Nubanusit River to use the energy needed to make rune brought to the village. In the mid-1800's, the colonial family purchased the Harris Funds and established a Cheshire plant. When the business closed its doors in 1970, a group of citizens and reservations teamed up to create a nonprofit organization called Historic Harrisville, Inc., which immediately acquired several major buildings to renovate and lease the business. John J. Colony III played an important role in this endeavor. Harrisville Designs's Village was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1977. It is recognized as the only textile settlement of the 18th century in America.
