After producing top-notch Bordeaux-varietal wines for fifteen years, Dan and Margaret Duckhorn decided to embrace their increasing passion for Pinot Noir in 1990. Their plan for Goldeneye Winery was straightforward, but not uncomplicated. They desired to establish a winery that could produce California Pinot Noir with the same level of recognition as the renowned Merlots they had established at Duckhorn Vineyards in Napa Valley.
