About Capri Theatre
Capri Theatre mission is to preserve Capri Theatre as an operating movie theater by preserving its architectural integrity and to educate, encourage, and develop public appreciation of the art of filmmaking, both domestically and internationally. The Clover/Capri has had a lot of different owners and operators over the years. It was originally built as part of the Wilby-Kincey chain. In the end, in order to save the theater, a group of neighbors established the Capri Community Film Society in 1982. Their chance came when the district attorney raided and closed the theater because he thought it was too pornographic. The Capri Community Film Society took over the lease and operations out of concern that they would lose their beloved, but decaying, neighborhood theater. The struggling non-profit was able to keep the theater open over the years thanks to memberships and donations, as well as the efforts of its volunteer Board of Directors.
