The Barbour family purchased Bolesworth in 1856. Robert Barbour (1797-1885) came down to Manchester from Glasgow in 1815 and set up a cotton exchanging business there called Robert Barbour and Sibling. Manchester was vigorously dirtied and he chose to move his family to rustic, friendly Cheshire. He was a profoundly strict man and accepted that God expected him to take care of his responsibilities there. Bolesworth has been worked in 1826 by the Cheshire designer William Coles a student of Thomas Harrison of Chester. It was based on the impression of a previous house dating from 1750. The lake was dived in 1790 and its stone extension was crafted by Robert Mylne (1734-1811), a Scottish draftsman and structural specialist, notable in his day.
