Big Sur International Marathon was founded in 1986 and is today managed by the 15-person Governance Committee of the non-profit Big Sur Marathon Foundation. Over the past three decades, the Foundation has joined the Monterey Bay Half Marathon (2003), running in the name of Love (2013) and the Salinas Valley Half Marathon (2015). The competition is managed by 6 full-time staff throughout the year. A 70-person activity committee supported all four races with the help of more than 2,000 volunteers. Big Sur International Marathon creates beautiful running activities that promote health and benefit their communities. On Highway 1 near Carmel Rio Road, a simple signpost inspired the founder Bill Burley to create it. The first run in 1986 was carried out along one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. In the next decade, Burley's participation will help determine the scope and direction of the Big Sur organization.
