Prior to the formation of the current club, football was played at St Albans City FC for 14 years. The original St Albans, which had been around since 1881 and also had home games at three other venues in the old Roman stronghold, died in 1904. A senior club with the city's name resurfaced in 1908 after a four-year hiatus, and during its early years, St Albans City FC participated in the Herts County and Spartan Leagues. The Saints' golden era began when they were elected to the Isthmian League after winning the Athenian League championship twice in three years in 1920.
