Although Karl and Suzanne Wester founded About Beads in 2001, the story begins much earlier. For Karl's job, Karl and Suzanne moved from sunny Florida to cold Michigan in 1992. Suzanne decided to try her hand at cross stitch because she didn't know anyone in Michigan. She began with small, straightforward projects before progressing to larger, more complex ones. She began working on The Snow Angel, her largest cross stitch project, in 1994. Beads were used as accents on the Snow Angel. She moved on to beading projects after deciding that she enjoyed working with the beads. She made a lot of beaded things, like necklaces, bags for amulets, and larger works of art. Suzanne only worked on beading projects after Karl and Suzanne moved back to Florida in 1997. She came up with the idea to sell hundreds of Delica beads online after collecting them. Karl designed the bespoke About Beads website in 2001.
