About Tobin James
Tobin James, a young assistant winemaker at the time, asked if he could have the grapes to make his own wine when a local grape harvester showed up at with six tons of extra Zinfandel grapes that he was willing to give away. The owner responded, Yes, kid, knock yourself out. Tobin James first wine, the now famous 1985 Blue Moon Zinfandel, received double gold medals and a spot on The Wine Spectator's coveted top 100 Wines of the year a year and a half later. The birth of it Cellars. It quietly produced his own popular small batch wines over the following few years, tasting and selling them out of a Paso Robles-area wine shop. Then, in 1993, it built Cellars and finally took the plunge. Lance and Claire Silver, partners and winemakers, joined them in 1996 to modernize and expand the winery. Additionally, they launched the most well-liked wine club in California, the james gang wine club.
