Each piece of pottery began as a primitive lump of clay, which was then transformed by artisans into a cup, plate, dinner plate, or lamp. After drying, glazing or decorating by hand, each green vessel can be fired. In the back room of Rowe Pottery Studios, a kiln the size of a small garage stands. The carts, known as trolleys, are piled high with green cutlery, ready to be lit for the final 12 hours.
