About Passamaquoddy Maple
Within the tribal homeland, there are three different autonomous communities. Their people have lived on the land throughout their history, and one of their indigenous food collection methods includes harvesting sweet juice from Mahgan. In 2013, Passamaquoddy Maple tribe created an economic development project to take advantage of this traditional natural resource: maple syrup. They have more than 65000 acres of land in northern Maine, where the main tree species are Mahgan, and they have rich resources of the cutting, but they lack the buying equipment, hire employees will be products to the market. Since Passamaquoddy Maple started operations, they have cut down more than 10,000 trees, produced more than 1,000 gallons of maple syrup, and created six seasonal and full-time jobs for their people. They are trying to produce the best quality grade A maple syrup, and obtained the Maine organic certification of organic farmers and growers association.
