In 1927, the famous Arkansas writer Bernie Babcock opened the Museum of Natural History and Heritage on the main street. It is the oldest museum in Arkansas. The original collection contained numerous treasures, including the well-known "Chicago Chief of Criminals". In 1929, Mrs. Babcock gave the museum to Little Rock as a Christmas gift, and the museum was moved to the City Hall. When city leaders decided Museum of Discovery needed the museum to occupy the space of the town hall, the museum closed in 1935. In 1939, Babcock received permission to reopen the Tower of the Federal Arsenal in Museum of Discovery. After years of hard work, the museum finally reopened in 1942 and has remained in its original location for the next 55 years.
