After 13 years of planning and fundraising by the western Michigan horticultural society, Meijer Gardens and sculpture park opened in April 1995. In 1990, Fred and Lena Meijer received their support and accepted the concept of a major cultural attraction centered on gardening and sculpture. It is an organization aiming to the public welfare, privately funded by foundations, donations, and persons and business gifts. The organization consists of nearly 200 full-time and part-time employees, more than 850 volunteers, and is supported by gifts from more than 27,000 family members and many donors. Meijer Gardens promotes the enjoyment, understanding and appreciation of Gardens, sculpture, natural environment and art.
