Little India is a family business. In 1991, Sukhi Gill founded this family restaurant in Dunedin, which has grown from a humble place into a national business with more than 16 small Indian restaurants in New Zealand. Suki and Joanna Gil opened a small dairy farm in Ravensbourne, just outside Dunedin, next to a fish and chips shop. When Su Xi's parents came from India, Su Xi decided to add some Indian dishes to the fish and chips shop's menu. Soon, there were long lines in the street, trying to taste new Indian dishes. With only one electric stove, it was difficult to meet demand, and Joanna (a chef) and Su Xi (an accountant) decided to open a New Zealand Indian restaurant. After receiving training at a family friend's restaurant in Australia, Sukhi returned home in 1991 and opened Little India.
