About King Cakes
King Cakes is a bakery delicacy with an oval shape that is both delicious and full of history. It is a cross between a coffee cake and a French pastry. It is adorned in the royal colors of green for faith, gold for power, and purple for justice. These hues were intended to resemble a glittering crown in recognition of the wise men who paid a visit to the Christ Child on Epiphany. It is believed that their custom arrived in New Orleans from France in 1870. King Cakesis a French pastry that looks like a coffee cake and has fillings like cream cheese, pecan praline, and strawberry. On Epiphany/Kings Day, January 6 — the first day of Carnival season — each cake contains a tiny plastic baby to represent Jesus' birth!
